Scottish Premiership football is played by Rangers Football Club, a professional football team headquartered in Glasgow's Govan neighborhood. Outside of Scotland, it is frequently referred to as Glasgow Rangers even though it is not its actual name.Four teenage boys who were walking through West End Park (now Kelvingrove Park) in March 1872 came up with the idea of starting a football club. Rangers, the fourth-oldest club in Scotland, played its first game against the now-defunct Callander at the Fleshers' Haugh area of Glasgow Green in May of that same year. The third-largest football stadium in Scotland is Ibrox Stadium, the home field of Rangers. It was created by stadium architect Archibald Leitch and opened in 1929. The team has worn royal blue uniforms since its inception.
Scottish football's most successful team is Rangers. The club has a record of 55 Scottish League championships, 34 Scottish Cup victories, 27 Scottish League Cup victories, and seven domestic treble victories. After losing in the finals in 1961 (the first British club to reach a UEFA tournament final) and 1967, Rangers won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972. The team has lost two additional European championship games; in 2008, they advanced to the UEFA Cup Final, and in 2022, they finished as runners-up in the UEFA Europa League Final.
Scot Symon and Bill Struth
Bill Struth was Rangers' most successful manager. He took over after William Wilton passed away in 1920 and led the team to 14 league titles before the Second World War. A British league attendance record was broken on January 2, 1939, when 118,567 spectators showed out to witness Rangers defeat Celtic in the customary New Year's Day Old Firm game. Struth, who oversaw the team for 34 years until 1954, amassed more trophies than any other manager in the annals of Scottish Football, including 18 league titles, 10 Scottish Cups, two League Cups, seven wartime titles, 19 Glasgow Cups, 17 Glasgow Merchant Charity Cups, and other wartime honors. Rangers beat Celtic by an 8-1 margin in the Southern Football League during the wartime regional league system (during which the team won all seven seasons in addition to recognized championships on either side of the conflict in 1938–1939 and 1946–47).
Warburton, Caixinha, Murty, and a Premiership comeback
Mark Warburton's appointment as manager on a three-year contract was announced in June 2015. After spending four years in the lower levels, Rangers eventually won the 2015–16 Scottish Championship and received automatic promotion to the Scottish Premiership. The team also advanced to the Scottish Cup Final in 2016, defeating Old Firm rivals Celtic at Hampden in the semifinal before falling to Hibernian in the championship. On February 10, 2017, Mark Warburton and David Weir resigned Rangers following a disappointing first half of the 2016–17 campaign, and Graeme Murty was given caretaker leadership of the Rangers first team. Pedro Caixinha finally succeeded as manager on an ongoing basis.
